Building on the Bring Your Own Device Revolution
Colleges have been flooded with students who want to beef up their skills this year, and they're making room for them by rolling out new class schedules.
At Massachusetts Bay Community College, faculty members are teaching more courses, and in some cases, the school has hired more professors, reports boston.com.
Other colleges have taken a more drastic approach: They're adding classes on the weekends and late into the night. Middlesex Community College gave students the option to take courses on Saturdays last fall, and this year, they can add Sunday to the list too. Online classes also give schools a way to teach more students without taking up classroom space.
While students may be up at midnight, they usually don't take classes that late, at least until this fall. At Bunker Hill Community College, a record 10,000 students enrolled in courses, and because that's a 23 percent jump from last year, the school had to find a way to meet their needs. Now students can take classes that start at midnight, and their school could be the first college in the United States that gives them this option.
