With the economic recession showing no signs of retreat, record numbers of students and laid-off workers -- seeking low-cost tuition and new job skills -- are flocking to the nation's community colleges, ABC News reports.

Community colleges across the country are seeing unprecedented spring-term enrollments as students seek better deals and laid-off workers look to develop their skills. "Although final figures are not in, community colleges from New Hampshire to California are anecdotally reporting jumps in their enrollment since spring of last year of 4 percent to 19 percent," according to the article.

According to a recent Associated Press report, "the average annual cost of community college is $2,402, compared to $6,585 in tuition and fees at in-state public four-year schools, according to the College Board. Average tuition and fees for private four-year schools: $25,143."

But the ABC News article also said that community colleges are struggling just like the four-year colleges as this influx has led to escalating costs. Meanwhile, college students across the country are also hoping Obama's stimulus package will give them a much-needed boost.
