With the $6 million Biofuels Reseach Lab that opened this week, Cornell University researchers now have a brand new facility where they can search for alternative methods for fuel production, News 10 reports.
Researchers seek to cut the dependence on foreign oil by converting sugars from grasses and wood into fuel. This alternative fuel method is unlike curent methods such as, corn ethanol, because the university will be using nonfood crops. The 11,000-square-foot research lab is one of only a few such labs across the country, which officials say will be a big draw for prospective students. Officials also say the facility will produce jobs, not only from the lab but from agriculture.
"I'm convinced that this is going to be a leading part of the economy for the U.S. and for the world as we move away from petroleum," said Jeremy Luterbacher, a graduate student at the school.
