Ninety-four ninth-graders from school districts across three Ohio districts will begin classes today at a new charter school that specializes in high-tech education, the Dayton Daily News Reports.
The new Dayton Regional STEM School near Wright State University opens today, following months collaboration among educators and local government, Wright State and other area colleges, high-tech employers and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The idea behind the school that will focus on science, technology, engineering and math is to direct young students toward in-demand high-tech careers and to develop the level of science instruction in the region.
Charter school officials plan to add grades each year until it reaches 600 students in grades six to 12. One specific goal is to attact students with potential from under-served communities.
“It’s about providing gateways, the window for this kind of education for students who might not otherwise be thinking about it," said school spokeswoman Laurie A. McFarlin.
For right now, the school's interim home will be in the Clark State Community College building at 3775 Pentagon Blvd.
