Engineering with Legos

on April 7, 2009

How is Donley Elementary School in East Lansing, Mich. building engineering buzz? One block at a time -- a new engineering club gives students a chance to design problem-solving prototypes using Legos, the Lansing State Journal reports.

About 15 third-graders tried out for the school's Lego team, part of the national First Lego League organization that engages kids in research, problem solving and engineering through themed challenges. In the competitions, teams research and invent solutions to real-life problems and present their models to judges.

Last year's theme was global warming; this year, the topic is transportation efficiency and students had to create transportation solutions people could use if the world ran out of oil.

"It's a nice after-school activity that doesn't necessarily involve sports because not everybody likes sports," said Jeff Sakamoto, the team's head coach and an engineering professor at Michigan State University. "There are some students that really like intellectual challenges."
