Students that struggle with reading have the support of the community, thanks to an after-school literacy program that pairs adult volunteers with students. The program, called Experience Corps, has been effective in boosting literacy skills for students that have a hard time pronouncing words and reading comprehension, Mary Stackhouse reports for Neighborhood Network News.
Nathan Hale Elementary is one of 17 schools in the Boston area benefiting from the program. With a community mentor, some students are now reading above grade level. At Nathan Hale, students paired with an adult 55 or older are "scoring on average 60 percent higher in literacy."
"Volunteers are necessary," said Nathan Hale Principal Sandy Mitchell-Wood. "They bring that wealth of knowledge that not everyone has."
