46 States Volunteer to Follow National Education Standards

on June 1, 2009

All but four of the 50 states are jumping on board a plan to develop and adapt national standards for what kindergartners through high schoolers should be able to accomplish in reading and math.

The National Governor's Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers announced the decision today, reports baltimoresun.com. Texas, Missouri, Alaska and South Carolina have not agreed to adapt the standards, which would transfer local control over curriculum to the federal level.

The new standards would be cheaper to produce and would provide a measuring stick to compare students across the 46 states that plan to participate. The high school standards could be ready in the fall and would need to be approved by school boards.
