The popular Dr. Seuss books remain favorites with children and inspire them to read. Louisiana schools held parties to celebrate the author's birthday on March 2 as part of the National Education Association's annual Read Across America drive, reports William Johnson of the Daily World. More than 45 million people read a book during the drive, according to the association's Web site.

The association sponsors Read Across America to motivate kids to read. Kids marked the author's birthday by reading books and wearing hats like Cat in the Hat. The pre-kindergarten students in Yvette Laney's class listened to parents and guests share books.

"Our goal is to have every child read to by a caring adult," Laney said. "If we can encourage the children to read on their own, they will become not only better readers, but will do better in all their studies."
