For a Web site design contest last year, three students in New Mexico — Nikko Shaw, Richard Vittitow and Haley Barela — created a page that focused on conservation and helping endangered animals. They won the grand prize and from there, opportunities began to grow.

After the New Mexico Green Collaborative hired them to design the organization's Web site, the trio decided to start their own program: Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC), a non-profit collaborative created to raise awareness about learning possibilities beyond the four walls.

"I asked them at our last meeting if they wanted this to be a New Mexico thing or a U.S. thing," said Jamai W. Blivin, executive director of Innovate-Educate, which collaborates with EOTC along with the New Mexico Society for Technology in Education (NMSTE) . "They clarified immediately, 'No, a global thing!'"

On a mission to share ideas, network and engage the community on ways to solve issues in the world, the team has already created a fan page on Facebook. They have also released their first newsletter, which includes a feature by Shaw on a sustainable Japanese garden.

"We are striving to make a better educative community for persons in our local area, and eventually internationally," the team wrote in the newsletter. "We are doing everything from working with legislatures and representatives to community service to achieve a better education for our community."

The staff is inviting students from all over the world to join their movement. Check out the EOTC Facebook Fan Page here. For more information, contact EOTC at eotc.abq@gmail.com.
