In Mississippi, going green seems to be contagious. Across the state, colleges and universities have been promoting sustainability practices in an effort to preserve the environment, but also to lure students and save money, the Clarion Ledger reports.

Jackson State University's new $21 million engineering facility was built with recycled building materials and eco-friendly paint, and its sloped roof collects rain water for irrigation. The 90,000-square-foot building is Mississippi's first state-funded project to be LEED-certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design's green building rating system, according to the article.

In other parts of the state, schools are "starting campus bike fleets, environmentally focused curricula and conservation programs." Also, the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi are all participating in the national program called Recyclemania, where schools compete to see who has the best recycling program. According to the article, university leaders say they "aren't shying away from efforts to make their campuses more environmentally friendly, despite shrinking budgets."
