The University of Florida (UF) was the first in the nation to offer a construction degree with a green building concentration. In 2001, Kyle Abney received his master's and became the program's first graduate, the Palm Beach Post reports.
With that background, Abney became hot property as more companies, colleges and condominiums turn to green construction to save energy and money. Last year, he founded his own Palm City-based consulting firm, Abney + Abney Green Solutions.
But Abney didn't originally plan to go into green construction. At UF, he started out focused on regular building construction until a sustainable development course inspired him to change directions. According to the article, Charles Kibert, the UF professor of that class, estimated that, since Abney, some 50 students have received master's degrees in construction with a green building concentration.
