Victoria Foundation is one of the oldest private foundations in America. Hendon Chubb created the Foundation in 1924 in order to improve the lives of those less fortunate than himself. Today, Victoria Foundation has a two-fold mission: To improve the lives of children and families in need in Newark, New Jersey; and to protect water resources and preserve precious open space statewide. To fulfill its Newark mission, the Foundation seeks to improve educational outcomes for young people, stabilize and revitalize distressed neighborhoods, promote civic engagement and leadership, increase job training and placement opportunities, help children develop into healthy adults, and strengthen families and prevent crises. Since 1995, the Victoria Foundation has played an important role in helping to improve academic outcomes for Newark public school children, especially those in the early grades. With major support for long-term school district partnerships with Bank Street College of Education and Children's Literacy Initiative, significant gains have been made in fourth grade standardized test scores in both language arts and math. Unfortunately, these gains are usually not sustained past the fifth grade. The Foundation is exploring the needs of middle and high school youth, and has recently provided support to improve the teaching practices of middle grade educators. The Foundation also supports a cadre of high quality charter, private and parochial schools in Newark in order to provide parents with viable alternatives and to encourage imitation of best practices. Many grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations that provide much needed academic enrichment to students in both public and nonpublic schools, including arts education programs intended to spark creativity and engagement.
