The Meadows Foundation is a charitable organization that aims to assist Texas residents and improve the quality of life for current and future generations. The Foundation was founded in 1948 by Algur H. and Virginia Meadows with the purposes of eliminating ignorance, hopelessness, and suffering, protecting the environment, promoting cultural enrichment, encouraging excellence, and fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among people. The Foundation has five areas of giving: (1) Arts and Culture: supporting fine arts, theater, music, dance, and literature; (2) Civic/Public Affairs: focusing on efforts to improve economic stability, public safety, community development, and protection of the environment; (3) Education: supporting early reading, experimental learning, tutoring, and mentoring programs; (4) Health: supporting programs that provide prenatal care, childhood immunizations and pediatric care, specialized care for the elderly, and efforts to address the issues of accessibility to care, including the uninsured; and (5) Human Services: support for nonprofit organizations that conduct programs that provide job skills training, or emergency food or shelter. Currently, the Foundation has specified three high areas of interest as well: (1) Support of the natural environment; (2) Improving the educational outcomes of Texas children; and (3) Mental health services. Grants are disbursed throughout the State of Texas, however between one-third and one-half of all donations are provided to Dallas-area organizations.
