Marbrook Foundation deadlines are June 1 and December 1. Trustee meetings to consider grant proposals are generally held in June and December. Specific dates for the Trustee meetings are usually determined approximately five months ahead of time.
Marbrook Foundation makes grants to tax-exempt organizations in five areas of focus: Environment; Education; Body, Mind and Spirit; the Arts; and Social Empowerment. In all areas, grant making is generally limited to organizations or programs operating in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. In the Environment area, the Foundation is interested in organizations or programs operating in Minnesota, whose primary mission is to address one of these issues: land conservation; environmental education; water quality; and the long-term sustainability of Minnesota's forests. In the Education area, the Foundation is interested in organizations and programs that help underprivileged youth and high school students succeed academically; community education; post-secondary education; organizations whose primary focus is English language instruction for immigrants and refugees; and organizations that work to preserve the ties of immigrants and refugees to their home culture by creating or supporting resources in the arts, crafts, music, dance, and written source materials. In the Body, Mind and Spirit area, the foundation is interested in organizations and programs that focus on the mind-body-spirit connection. The foundation plans to further explore and define this area over the next few years. For now, particular areas of interest include programs that work to disseminate information that helps individuals achieve self-realization or improvement; organizations focused on contemplative practices; and institutions promoting integrative medicine and alternative healing practices. In the Arts area, the foundation is interested in arts education; music; theater; museums; and artistic, cultural and historic preservation. In the Social Empowerment area, the foundation is interested in affordable housing; job training; economic and community development; programs that help youth and families develop life skills; and organizations providing support services to immigrants and refugees. Members of the extended family of Edward Brooks and Markell C. Brooks may recommend grants to tax-exempt organizations. There are no geographical or area of focus limitations on family- recommended grants. In 2007, the Foundation awarded $136,000 or 16 percent of its total grants pursuant to this program. The foundation has no formal application form. Proposals are usually submitted as letters with attachments. The Minnesota Common Grant Application will be accepted provided that all of the following information is included. Applicants should submit one copy of a proposal including the following: 1) Description of the organization requesting support 2) Description of the objectives for which the grant is sought; 3) Specific details on how the objectives are to be attained; 4) Budget; 5) List of major contributors and amounts received, committed or pending; 6) Proposed method of evaluation to determine the eventual extent to which the proposed objectives are to be met; 7) Board of Directors List; 8) 501(c)(3) Ruling Letter; 9) Most recent Annual Report.
