Deadlines vary by location. Board meetings are held monthly. A concept paper must be submitted via e-mail to the local Alcoa grant contact or to Alcoa Foundation before a formal grant proposal is prepared. The concept paper will be reviewed by the Alcoa location contact or by an Alcoa Foundation staff member, who will contact the organization. In addition to the concept paper, the applicant may be asked to submit a Project Budget. If the local Alcoa contact or Alcoa Foundation staff member is interested in the proposed project, a discussion will be initiated with the organization in order to agree on the specific project and grant amount which will be recommended for funding to Alcoa Foundation.
Alcoa Foundation is a source of positive community change and enhancement. Four distinct areas of excellence help guide the allocation of its resources to Alcoa communities: (1) Conservation & Sustainability, (2) Safe and Healthy Children and Families, (3) Global Education and Workplace Skills, and (4) Business and Community Partnership. (1) Conservation & Sustainability: The focus of this area is on educating young leaders, protecting our forests, and promoting sound public policy research, and understanding the linkages between business and the environment. (2) Safety & Healthy Children & Families: The goal of this area is to ensure that children and their families have the tools, knowledge, and services to remain healthy and safe at home, in the community and in the workplace. (3) Global Education & Workplace skills: The aim of this focus area is to provide student and adult education in technical areas central to Alcoa and to ensure that a diverse cross-section of our communities is economically connected, workplace ready, and globally competitive. (4) Business & Community Partnerships: The focus of this area is building corporate citizenship through partnerships between non-profits, the private sector, and local government. All proposal request activities, including such things as requests for purchasing equipment or for sponsoring conferences, must align with one of the Areas of Excellence and must be attached to a defined program or project activity. Example 1: If a request to buy a microscope is included in the proposal, the applicant must describe how this microscope will be used to carry out a programmatic objective, why it is needed, and what will be the benefit to the proposed participants. Example 2: Requests for funds for a conference or seminar must be integrated as a part of a programmatic objective beyond sponsorship; sponsorships alone are not allowable costs. Applicants must refer to the proposal limitations section before submitting proposal requests. Alcoa Foundation is a nonprofit U.S. corporate foundation with assets of approximately US $542 million.
