W.K. Kellogg Foundation supports children, families, and communities as they strengthen and create conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve success as individuals and as contributors to the larger community and society. The foundation has frames its programming around five core elements: (1) Family Income and Assets; (2) Community Assets; (3) Education and Learning; (4) Food, Health and Well-Being; and (5) Civic and Philanthropic Engagement. These areas described as follows: (1) Family Income and Assets: building sustainable, multi-generational financial independence for vulnerable and low-wealth families through sustained income generation and asset accumulation that increases economic opportunities, options, and choices for current and future generations. Fundable projects may involve education and workforce development; entrepreneurship and small business development; affordable and safe housing; increasing access to financial institutions, credit and financial education; and accessing public benefit programs to accelerate asset building and economic opportunities. (2) Community Assets: By helping communities thrive via good schools, equitable social supports, and ample employment opportunities, optimal child and family development success is more possible. Projects may support community economic growth and viability; build social capital and networks; establish fair and equitable community-based systems, such as food, health, education, and economics; and influence public policies that support safe, healthy, and socially just communities. (3) Education and Learning: The focus of this area is to build and align formal and informal systems that support family literacy and promote optimal learning outcomes for vulnerable children and youth. Innovative education and learning partnerships between schools, families, communities, government, and the business sector that align and strengthen the conditions for learning is one of the priorities of this focus area. (4) Food, Health and Well-Being: Economic and social conditions determine the well-being of children, their families, and their communities. This holistic view of what children need covers a broad spectrum of community factors to include living without fear of violence and crime, in a place with clean air and water that is not burdened with excess environmental toxins, and in communities where health care and food are safe, accessible, and affordable. (5) Civic and Philanthropic Engagement: Persistent barriers exist that undermine vulnerable populations' abilities to fully participate in the democratic process which has a cascading effect on the quality of life, and on equitable and adequate access to resources and services necessary for children and families to thrive. The focus of this area is to catalyze and scale civic and philanthropic engagement across and within diverse communities to strengthen vulnerable children, families, and communities. Key approaches to all program areas include racial equity; a sense of place/community, leadership/advocacy; innovative policies/policy change; and success by third grade.
