Summary:

Cardinal Health and the Cardinal Health Foundation support programs that improve healthcare safety and quality, and programs that promote healthy and vibrant communities. The Foundation encourages employees to get involved in and give back to their communities, and works through international agencies to provide disaster relief. (1) Improving Healthcare Quality: Medication safety and healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are two of the largest patient safety issues that healthcare organizations face. The Cardinal Health Foundation plans to invest $15 million from 2008 to 2011 to reduce HAIs and medication errors throughout the United States, with a particular emphasis on communities where Cardinal Health employees live and work. Specifically, the Cardinal Health Foundation will provide funding to organizations and programs that: (a) set national priorities related to healthcare quality; (b) provide education opportunities for healthcare professionals; (c) research and recognize best practices for improving healthcare; and/or (d) implement best practices for improving healthcare quality (Patient Safety Grants, grants to develop scale-able healthcare models in Ohio and San Diego, and International Grants are in this category). (2) Building healthy communities: The Foundation funds local education, programming and community partnerships that: (a) promote active, healthy lifestyles for children, families and the elderly through the schools and the broader community, specifically, projects that focus on the early years of life when health habits are formed, make school and afterschool environments healthy, and link to existing community partnerships; (b) encourage health literacy, patient education and engagement; and (c) prevent the abuse and misuse of prescription drugs. (3) Encouraging employee involvement: this is done through matching gifts programs, leadership and team volunteer grants. (4) Disaster relief: When disaster strikes, the Cardinal Health Foundation works through key international relief agencies including AmeriCares, Heart to Heart, MAP International, Operation USA and World Vision to donate much-needed medical supplies to communities who need them.
