Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. The Distribution Committee meets six times per year, usually in January, March, May, July, September and November. The first step in applying for a grant from the foundation is to submit a letter of inquiry. Consult the foundation's guidelines for details.
The focus of the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation is to support projects and collaborative efforts that reach as many people as possible in Bandera, Bexar, Comal, and Kendall counties in Texas; involve the persons served in developing solutions; raise expectations; build self-esteem; develop personal and organizational capacity; encourage innovation; and make use of technology. Program Areas and Goals include: Health and Human Services: The goals of this program area are to improve the quality of life for the elderly and those with disabilities by helping them to be healthy and productive members of the communities in which they live; to develop character and self-reliance in young persons through organized activities founded on traditional values of respect and responsibility; to free children from abuse and neglect; and to improve health through selected medical research efforts. Proposals of particular interest to the Foundation are for projects serving the disabled and elderly that: (1) increase their awareness about available resources and provide assistance in accessing such programs; (2) improve safety and security in their places of residence; (3) create opportunities for their interaction with children and their families; (4) improve mental health; (5) extend existing resources or develop new and innovative services aimed at the under-served among the elderly and those with disabilities. The foundation is also interested in projects that (1) treat alcoholism; (2) combine under-utilized facilities and resources to extend services; (3) provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in recreational activities; (9) provide temporary care for persons with disabilities; (4 ) develop the self-esteem of the elderly and/or persons with disabilities through technology; (5) support the use of animals in assisting the elderly and those with disabilities; and (6) provide personal advocates for the elderly and those with disabilities who suffer from abuse and neglect. Culture: The goals in this program area are to foster meaningful cultural activities and broaden public participation therein, and to expand or improve the public use of information and learning available through museums and libraries. Proposals of particular interest to the Foundation are projects that : (1) establish the long-term viability of cultural activities and broaden participation from all parts of the communities served; (2) facilitate the study of music, dance, theater, the visual arts, and other cultural activities by disadvantaged young persons; (3) increase attendance at cultural activities by disadvantaged or disabled persons; (4) foster interaction between those in cultural organizations and public schools; (5) attract national and international cultural or artistic exhibits and events. Other Programs and Goals: to expand or improve public parks, zoos and wildlife sanctuaries and broaden the use of such facilities; to prevent cruelty to animals; and to assist victims of public disasters in Texas. Proposals of particular interest to the Foundation are projects that: (1) increase the use of public park facilities and zoos; (2) make parks more accessible and secure for family recreation; (3) protect and preserve wildlife and natural areas; (4) promote responsible pet ownership; and (5) reduce animal bite incidents. Grants under the assistance to victims of public disasters in Texas program goal will be initiated by the Foundation. These goals are based upon the Foundation's charitable purposes which are not all encompassing but rather reflect the Kronkoskys' interests specified in the Foundation Trust Agreement. The Foundation reassesses the types of programs and projects it funds as more is learned about the underlying issues and as circumstances change in the communities served.
History of Funds:
On July 22, 2008 the Foundation's Distribution Committee held a meeting and approved $1,266,856 of grants to 14 organizations. These grants included $600,000 for programs serving the elderly, $250,000 to the San Antonio Zoo, $200,000 related to prevention of child abuse, $139,800 in arts activities and $77,056 related to illnesses.
