Wi-Fi Could Bridge the Digital Divide

on March 5, 2009

Plano school district officials envision a world where everyone in the city, regardless of their economic status, has free access to the Internet at all times everyday -- and they hope to get there in the next two years, The Dallas Morning News reports.

Around the globe, the Internet has been a crucial connection tool. Similar community wireless network efforts, however, have failed in other districts; but despite the financial and technological obstacles, school officials say "providing Wi-Fi to low-income families is important" in Plano ISD, where the number of economically disadvantaged students nearly doubled from 4,466 to 8,509 from 2001 to 2008. School officials "hope low-income students will finally be able to research school projects, log into the district's educational software and communicate with their teachers -- all from home," according to the article.

If successful, Plano would be one of the country's first school districts to create a community wireless network, experts say.
