Some university faculty are embracing social networking tools such as Twitter to engage their students and promote discussion, according to the U.S. News & World Report.

History professor Monica Rankin started using Twitter in class so that the 90 students in her lecture at the University of Texas-Dallas could post messages and ask questions that were displayed on a projector screen during class. Because the class was so big, the students wouldn't have been able to communicate as much as they do now that they tweet messages.

Students can also use Twitter to network with professionals, as marketing and online business professor Elaine Young encourages. At Champlain College in Vermont, she said that many of her students are working with local businesses to figure out what kinds of online tools they can use to establish their online presence.
