In the next few months, stimulus money will start to pour into the nation's schools, and Arizona wants to use its forthcoming $12.4 million to play catch up. Arizona schools plan to use that federal money -- plus $5 million from the regular federal education budget -- to buy equipment, implement high-speed Internet and train teachers to integrate the technology in the classroom, The Arizona Republic reports.

Many academic institutions across the country aim to equip students with 21st-century skills, but Arizona has struggled for years to get its schools connected to the Internet, and technology funding sunk from $12.1 million to $4.7 million.

This new funding, expected to arrive before July 1, will help Arizona students compete in a global job market, officials said.

"In all this bad news, it's a little bright spot," said Cathy Poplin, who heads the state's technology efforts for K-12 schools.
