Medical scientists scrambled to apply for grants totaling $10 billion, and the competition is stiff.

While 200 or 300 challenge grants will be awarded –– which are two-year, $1 million awards for new patient treatment development –– the National Institutes of Health received more than 15,000 proposals, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer. Universities want to accomplish a lot of research with these grants and other grants called instrument grants, including buying a super computer, a DNA sequencer to identify tumor mutations and a medical cyclotron for accurate medical imaging.

The University of Pennsylvania started a virtual war room at its campus to improve its chances of receiving grant funding. The war room includes a Web site and around-the-clock staff support, among other things.
