Orange County school districts told about 3,500 teachers and certified staff that they could be laid off next year, and that plan won't change with the $8.6 billion injection of federal stimulus funds for education in California.
"A lot of people feel that when they hear that hundreds of millions are coming to schools from the federal stimulus that all the problems have gone away," said county Superintendent William Habermehl. "That is not true."
The money won't be enough to avoid layoffs or cuts to school programs, reports the Orange County Register. In Anaheim Union High School District, Superintendent Joseph Farley estimates that about $9 million to $10 million in stimulus bucks will come to the district. However, the money will only save about 10 of the 151 jobs that will be cut because the district plans to slash its budget by $23 million this year and $24 million next year.
