I bet it was hard to limit this post to a couple hundred words because there are so many ways to convey this topic. Bottom line is that the general public can't relate since the majority of us did not grow up with technology in school. Technology definitely ADDS workload to both teachers and students. And you are right, it's not a substitute, but helps connect teachers and students better. Nice perspective Taylor.

Being a student at a technology-based school is very different, but what most people may not think about is what it is like to be a teacher at Empire. Many people think that at technology-based schools, our computer is our teacher. While it is true that we utilize our laptops for most assignments, the way we learn is through our teachers. They don't just hand us packets, they teach us. We have scheduled classes just as normal schools do and, personally, my laptop is not the focus of my classes but rather an integral tool that helps me learn.

Empire teachers also have more immediate resources to show their students. Links to Web sites from their blogs make teaching easier than traditional instruction. There are quite a few days when we have in-class projects and we are on our computers researching for the assignment. The lessons do not really have to be as structured as normal schools. Nor do they have to be as creative when coming up with paper resources, etc.

I have experienced technology-based and regular high schools. From my view, it is the teachers that make the difference. At Empire, the teachers seem to put more trust into you. Their expectations are higher. I feel that when adults trust teens, teens in turn feel more mature and behave better. The teachers at Empire interact with the students and really help us understand what we need to know.

If I was given the choice, I could not choose between a great teacher and a laptop. They both play an important role in my education at Empire. I am lucky to have both.

Thank you Taylor! You're correct that a good education begins with good teachers. It's not the technology that does the "magic". Technology, whether it's a laptop, an interactive whiteboard, or all tech gadgets put together, is only a small part of education. I believe as a teacher that all my tech gadgets are tools of my trade. Just like a carpenter has many different tools, so do I. Just because the carpenter may have the latest tools doesn't mean he/she is the best at their trade. It comes do done skill, heart, and passion. Those are traits for any job or profession. I'm lucky to be apart of the exciting tech trend in education and how technology will really change how teaching is done and I think it's for the better.

Higher education in this country is rapidly becoming a necessity in the business community rather than a luxury. There was a time when those who had a high school education still had the opportunity to build a better world for themselves and their families. Those days are rapidly becoming another dieing ember of the past. [...] Barbara Brown Laptop Fanatic

When it comes down to the importance of an education there is no denying that the longer you stay in school the better off you are when it comes to earning potential over the course of your lifetime. Recent estimates have presented some rather astonishing figures to support these claims however, and I for one [...] Laptop Fanatic
