Comparing and Contrasting Today's Education

on September 23, 2009

I wish it was done, that is my dissertation. I've been working on this paper for almost two years. It's like the words and paragraphs just keep growing. Sometimes (like at this very moment), it feels as though this will never be finished. One of the things that seems to slow me down and throw me off track is the constant revisions I have to do. The chairperson on my dissertation committee is always having me change different aspects of the paper. Sometimes my writing style is a little too casual. Sometimes the grammar isn't that great. But my biggest problem is that I do a poor job on comparing and contrasting.

I am supposed to compare and contrast different theories as they relate to my paper. I am asked to see the similarities, bring out the
differences and analyze the gap between the two. It's basically a concept that wants to focus on the good between something that is different.

If you took two different educational settings from different times and practiced comparing and contrasting, what could that look like and
what could we learn? Last week, I filmed a video using students from Oakland Christian School and tried to illustrate a contrast what
educational leaders can learn from. One classroom is set up in a traditional format with a teacher being engaged with himself. The
other classroom showcases a teacher who interacts with students and is intentional about the relationships being made. One class has students trying to stay awake and the other has students wanting more time.

Although the video is a dramatic representation, it hopefully illustrates what we want to accomplish in our schools: Learning is about the student. That's it. Technology is great, and new school buildings are amazing to look at, but teachers have to invest and engage with their students. Hopefully, next week, I will be able to show the video to you and you can give me your input.
