The Los Angeles Unified School District has a deal with the teachers union in the works that, if approved, would open 20 more "pilot" schools next year, the Contra Costa Times reports.

Different from charter schools, pilot schools operate within district control, but give administrators, teachers and community members decision-making power when it comes to school rules: spending, curriculum, professional development, etc. Also, district unions still represent employees. Announced this week, the tentative deal would bring the number of innovative pilot schools up to 30.

The first 10 pilots, officials say, have been successful. But the deal comes at a time when the district is waiting to see who will run 36 new and underperforming schools up for bid. Several schools have expressed interest in coverting to the pilot school model. But the pilot agreement must first be approved by the union’s governing body and the school board. If it is not approved by February, applicants might not have the choice to implement the popular pilot option in the district schools.

“Our pilot school model should be celebrated because it was developed by educators, parents and community members at our school sites,” L.A. schools Superintedent Ramon C. Cortines said in a release. “Working together, they have improved teaching and learning."
