Out of 256 cities around the globe, Boston has been named the No. 1 innovation city in the world, according to a four-year global study.
The report, released by the Innovation Analysts 2thinknow, comes out at a time when most U.S. cities trail Europe and Asia in the innovation race. New York and the San Francisco Bay Area were ranked as top nexus cities, but the report called for cities to connect with each other to build successful innovation clusters that could compete with Asia and Europe, Reuters reports.
Due to broadband, start-ups, ports, freight and business approach, Asian cities such as Kyoto, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul were outpacing U.S. cities. Asian and European cities have the ability to be online anywhere, which was singled out as a key driver in economic growth spurred by innovation.
American cities competing with Asian and European cities include Philadelphia, Vancouver, Montreal, Dallas-Fort Worth, Seattle and Portland. But, according to the report, if these cities do not innovate and close the gap in such things as finance, mobility and education, the U.S. as a whole would remain behind.
Christopher Hire, innovation analyst and executive director at 2thinknow, said that cities "want to innovate and profit from the new era of networks and connectivity will need to be networked. Not just digitally, but physically. The next high growth company -- and next jobs -- will come from clusters of cities that are interconnected."
